Everybody likes their laptop to work as long as possible on its battery, so everywhere there's a little power saving to accomplish, notebook manufacturers seize it with both hands. It seems a little far fetched, but a future version of Intels drivers will save a little more power inside the laptop by completely disabling the LAN connection when it's not in use. Right now the LAN connection remains powered when idle. The power savings aren't tremendous, but certainly worthwhile. According to Intels measurements, a fully loaded Gigabit connections uses roughly 1.3 Watts. In idle mode a typical LAN-connection uses 0.15 Watt. When completely disabled the power usage of course is 0 Watt.
