Intel 945GC chipset for budget Conroes
Digitimes reports on an upcoming version of the 945G chipset that will be compatible with Core 2 Duo (Conroe) processors with a 800 MHz frontside bus. We expect this 945GC to be launched in the first quarter of 2007 and the new chipset will be the base of a new range of low-budget Intel mainboards. The story claims that Intel will introduce new affordable Core 2 Duo E4000 and Pentium E1000 processors to go with these boards. The 945GC of course has an intergrated graphics card (not Vista Premium compatible!) and also offers support for a discrete PCI-Express x16 video card.
Digitimes thinks the main reason for Intel to introduce the 945GC is that they're afraid the ATI will abruptly stop producing their RC410 and RC415 chipsets, that are very succesfull in Intel-based budget systems.
