During the keynote of the second day of IDF, Intel announced that they will enhance the x86 instruction set with more than 50 new instructions in 2007. Most of these new instructions will be part of the SSE4 extensions and are targeted at further accelerating various multimedia applications. Besides Intel will introduce some so-called application targeted accelerators, special instructions targeted at particular kinds of software. One of these new enhancements will be an instruction that can calculate the CRC value of a polynomal, another example is a bunch of new instructions that speed up pattern recognition, needed for searches in large amounts of data. The first processor that will feature the new instructions will be the 45 nm Penryn, due to be launched at the end of 2007.
