[IDF] First 45 nm processors in 2H07
In the IDF opening keynote Intel announced that in the second half of 2007 they will introduce the first CPUs produced with a 45 nanometer production proces. With this achievement Intel again leaps ahead of its main competitors: last year Intel was the first to market 65 nm processors and since then Intel has sold more than 40 million of these 65 nm chips, where their competitors still haven't managed to bring a single 65 nm chip to the market.
Right now Intel has a single production site that's suited for 45 nanometer production, Fab D1D in Oregon. This plant is now producing samples of 45 nanometer chips and will be the main production facility for Intels first generation 45 nanometer processors. Besides Intel is constructing two new 45 nanometer plants, one in Arizona (Fab 32) and one in Israel (Fab 28). These plants should be ready for production in de second half of 2007 (Arizona) and the first half of 2008 (Israel).
The designs for the first 45 nanometer processor (based on the Core microarchitecture) will be ready within three months from now. Intel told us that they're currently working on at least fifteen 45 nanometer designs.
