One of the main reasons why a MIMO router is more expensive than a regular model is the fact that a MIMO model needs a fair amount of chips and other componens. MIMO makes use of at least three aerials and therefore need besides a single controller also three transmitters and other components. The big news is that Intel succeeded in integrated everything that is needed for a MIMO WLAN-controller into a single chip. This can result in a considerable price reduction of MIMO products, but also makes it possible to use MIMO technology in smaller products. The image below shows a normal MIMO WLAN-controller on the left and Intels new all-in-one MIMO-chip on the right. Of course we can expect that a chip like this can become a part of a future version of the Centrino mobile platform.
