Hynix has announced the second generation of its 1 Gbit DDR3 memory chips. The chips features a 54nm process and are to be more efficient than the current DDR3 versions. The new chips use the standard 1,5V voltage and according to Hynix require up to 30% less energy than the current generation of memory chips. According to iSuppli, the 1 Gbit chips represent the largest part of the DDR3-market; something that won't be changed soon.

This second generation DDR3 chips is Hynix' answer to the demand for more efficient components for both consumer- and server market. Mass production on the 54nm 1 Gbit chips is to start later this month. The next step Hynix wishes to make is to create a 40nm-based 2 Gbit DDR3 chip.
