Hard disk manufacturer Western Digital has announced that two of its external My Book disks will be equipped with an 'e-label'. The e-label is a digital label that features a small string of text to adress the disk's content. It also displays how much of the HDD's capacity has been used. The e-label uses e-paper technology, which means that the displaying of data does not require power. As a result, the text stays visible when the disk is detached from its power connectors.
Initially, only the My Book Studio and My Book Elite will feature the label. The first disk is primarily intended for Macintosh users, which means thhe disk comes with an HFS+ file system and FireWire 800 connector. The Elite comes NTFS-formatted and sports a USB 2.0 port. Western Digital has made this model more ompact. Both versions are bundled with the company's SmartWare software and support a 256-bit encryption of the stored data.
The My Book Studio with e-label is available in capacities of 500 GB, 1 TB, 1.5 TB and 2 TB, at recommended pricetags of respectively US $150, $190, $230 and $300. The My Book Elite series will not feature a 500 GB and in ascending capacities, the other models will set you back US $170, $200, and $280. The price includes a three-year warranty.

The My Book Studio has a silver finish, the My Book Elite a black one
