Kingston has introduced the 'MobileLiteG2', a compact cardreader that is plugged directly into a USB-port, as if it were a flashdrive. The slot on the other side supports memory cards of the type SD/SDHC, microSD/SDHC, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo or Memory Stick Micro. Its compact size makes Kingston's cardreader a rather mobile solution and a potentially ideal addition for computers and older laptops that do not yet feature an integrated cardreader.
The device weighs less than 19,5 grams and is sized 62,15 x 29,40 x 16,40 mm. Thanks to the USB2.0-interface, the memory card can be read at maximum speed. The cardreader supports Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7, as well as any Linux distribution featuring kernel version 2.6.x. or higher. Users of a Macintosh operating system will also be able to use the cardreader when Mac OS X 10.3.x or newer is installed.
Kingston bundles the small MobileLiteG2 with a USB cable and a two-year warranty. The cardreader has a recommended pricetag of $11, while bundles with 4 or 8GB Class 4 SDHC memory cards cost respectively $28,5 and $46.
