Last month, OCZ released a new version of its Z-Drive, a PCI-Express controller with a number of integrated SSD drives. The company has now itnroduced the Z-Drive M84, meant for the middle- and high-end segment with improved performance at a relatively lower price. The SSD is sized 195 x 32 x 127 mm (L*H*D) and weighs about 500 grams. The drive with PCI-E interface uses MLC NAND flashchips combined in a RAID 0 configuration. This allows maximum reading- and writing speeds of respectively 870 MB/s and 780 MB/s to be reached. To optimally use its speed, the Z-Drive uses a PCI-Express x8 interface and features 256 MB of cache memory. The drive is supported in Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and has a specified MTBF of a million hours.
The Z-Drive can be used as a boot device or as data storage, though the latter would be a rather expensive solution. The Z-Drive M84 will be available in capacities of 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB and comes with a three-year warranty. OCZ's Z-Drive M84 series is to be released shortly. Prices have not yet been mentioned.
