Synology has added the new 2.5" 4-bay DS409slim to its line-up. The latest model from the 9-series should feature a lower power consumption, quieter operationg, smaller chassis and a smaller pricetag.
The DS409slim uses a Marvell 6281 processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and sports 128 MB of DDR2-memory, a Gigabit Ethernet connector, one eSATA- and two USB 2.0-connectors. The NAS can be equipped with up to 2 TB of storage by placing four 500 GB 2.5" hard disks in the Disk station. The placing or switching of harddisks and SSD's is claimed to be an easy process. The 120 x 105 x 142 mm sized DS409slim uses 19 Watt under normal load when four hard disks are present in the device. The harddisks can be placed in RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and JBOD.
The Disk Station Manager 2.1 software in the DS409slim supports Windows ADS integration, cross platform data sharing, RAID data protection and several Back-up options. Also supported are applications such as 24x7 BitTorrent, FTP, HTTP, eMule and other multimedia programs such as Internet Radio and iPod playback. Users of a mediaplayer will be happy to know the NAS supports UPnP (DMA) as well. It's expected that the Disk Station Manager 2.2 software will be released in a beta version later this month, adding even more functions.
