AMD CEO Dirk Meyer has reported to Digitimes that the company is currently developing a platform that is more efficient, smaller, cheaper and with more features than the current Intel Atom platform, which seems to be the sole ruler of the netbook market. Meyer also mentioned that the new platform is meant for notebooks, not for netbooks. He claims that the term netbook will start to disappear as the systems will become more powerful and the notebooks are becoming more compact. AMD expects to ship the first samples of its new platform to partners in 2010.

HP's Pavilion DV2 netbook based on AMD's Yukon platform

AMD will release a new mainstream platform soon, codenamed Tigris. Also part of the release schedule are Congo and Yukon, both based on respectively a dualcore and singlecore Athlon Neo. These two platforms are to serve the ultra-portable segment, which includes the thin notebooks. Lastly, Meyer reported that a fourth platform is under development; this one will be positioned in between Congo and Yukon. Neither a name nor specifications of this fourth platform are known.
