[Computex09] Acer introduces Android netbook
On the Computex convention, Acer has shown a netbook featuring Google's Android operating system. The netbook is equal in hardware to the existing Aspire One netbooks. The Android software is a special version of Linux, equipped with a new interface and pre-loaded with numerous Google-utilities. According to Acer, the desktop version of Android requires a lot less CPU usage than Windows, allowing users to work faster with this netbook than with a conventional model. Initially, the Android netbooks will have Windows pre-installed, featuring a dual-boot configuration to run Android. If Android becomes a success on the netbook market, Acer will consider releasing a model with nothing but it. The Taiwanese PC-builder will initially only sell the new netbook to Telecom operators.
Acer however wasn't the only one showing a netbook with the Android operating system. Chip manufacturer Qualcomm showed an Android-powered Eee PC, made by ASUS. That Microsoft wasn't happy with this is a fact; the shown Eee PC has since disappeared and ASUS' CEO has offered his apologies for the presence of the system.
