Following competitors Sapphire and MSI, manufacturer XFX has launched a highly overclocked version of the Radeon HD 4890 graphics card, branded Radeon HD 4890 Black Edition. Like the competition, XFX has the RV790 chip clocked at a frequency of 1 GHz. The Black Edition card features 1 GB of GDDR5 memory, of which the clockspeed is still unknown. The package comes bundled with the game Tom Clancy's HAWX. At the moment of writing, the first hundred cards, with the serial number HD-489A-ZDBC have already been shipped to existing Black Edition customers of XFX. Within two weeks, a limited amount of cards should become available in several European webshops.

Allegedly, every HD 4890 chip has to undergo a quality test in AMD's factory to check whether or not the chip is suited for an overclocked graphics card. AMD would be selling these 'improved' chips seperately from the 'regular' RV790 chips, so that it will become easier for partners to select chips to use in their overclocked models.
