Last week, VIA announced a new mini-ITX motherboard specially designed for use in media servers. VIA claims that because the board is equipped with an efficient 1.6 GHz Nano processor, the VB8002 combines performance with economic power consumption.

Apart from VIA's own Nano processor, the VB8002 features a CX700M2 chipset with integrated UniChrome Pro II graphics chip, also produced by VIA. This chip is capable of hardware-accelerated MPEG-2/4 and WMV9 decoding. The board has a single DDR2-memory slot in which a module of up to 1 GB 667 MHz (PC6400) RAM can be placed. Also present is a Gigabit networkcontroller, 7.1 audio and a TV-out chip with HDTV encoder.

The 17 x 17 cm sized Mini-ITX motherboard is compatible with Windows 200, XP (Embedded) and Mobile, as well as several Linux distributions. It's still unclear what VIA's VB8002 with Nano processor will cost..
