That the SSD market is developing rapidly can be concluded from the amount of announcements by manufacturers. Patriot Memory has now introduced a new series of the drives, consisting of a 64 GB, 128 GB and a 256 GB version. The special thing about these new Fusion SSD's is the presence of 64 MB onboard cache memory, which should significantly improve the writing performance of the drive.
To place the extra DRAM on the SSD, Patriot used a different controller than the conventional JMicron JMF602 chip, since that model is unable to control additional cache memory. It's possible that Patriot chose to use a controller by Indilinx or Samsung, used in respectively the Vertex and Summit SSD's of competitor OCZ. Patriot claims that the added cache memory makes these SSD's perform better and decrease the limitations of flash memory. The extra buffer would also account for added stability. When Patriot's new Fusion SSD's will be released and at which cost is still unclear. The SSD's are named as following:
- PFZ256GS25SSDR: 256 GB
- PFZ128GS25SSDR: 128 GB
- PFZ64GS25SSDR: 64 GB
