Three months ago, QNAP introduced its first NAS based on the economic Intel Atom platform, branded TS-439 Pro Turbo NAS. THis week, the company announces a little brother to this 4-bay NAS in the form of the TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS. The most prominent difference is that the TS-239 doesn ot hold four, but only two 3.5-inch SATA hard disks, and has added support for the iSCSI protocol. The latter should make the NAS an interesting option for the business world as well.

Unsurprisingly, the TS-239 is smaller than it's larger brother. The device, sized 150 x 102 x 216 mm holds the same components as the TS-439, which includes an Intel Atom N230 1.6 GHz processor and 1 GB of DDR2 memory. QNAP's new NAS has two Gigabit networkconnectors, two eSATA ports and three USB 2.0 connectors -of which one is positioned on the front-. The device is powered by an external 60 Watt power supply and cooled by a modest 70 mm fan.

QNAP's TS-239 NAS is properly equipped in the fields of server functionality as well; the device sports an integrated FTP server, backup server, printserver, webserver, MySQL server, UPnP/DLNA server and an iTunes server. An integrated Bittorrent client is also present. Both Mac OSX, Linux and Unix are supported, as well as several RAID configurations and 256-bit AES encryption to secure entire partitions. A complete overview of all options can be found on QNAP's product page.
QNAP's TS-239 Pro Turbo NAS is expected to be released later this month. The bare device without hard disks will cost about €459, while models wih capacities of 500 GB up to 4 TB vary in price, ranging from €630 to €1.052.
