Last year, OCZ launched its Vertex series of SSD's. Now, the manufacturer introduces a more luxurious version of the disk, branded Vertex EX. The Vertex EX solid-state-drive uses the same Indilinx 'Barefoot'  controller, but then linked to faster and more sustainable SLC memory. This should make the Vertex EX capable of reaching even higher speeds than its predecessor, and perform better under high load, where it's required to process a large amount of small tasks. The Vertex EX will be available in capacities of 60 and 120 GB.

Like the regular Vertex, the EX features 64 MB cache memory and a SATA 3Gbps connector. The sequential processing speed is specified at a maximum of 260 MB/s for reading and 200 MB/s for writing. During extensive writing of large files, the speed drops to about 100 MB/s. The Vertex EX has an access time of less than 0.1 ms and is able to withstand forces of up to 1500 G.

The SLC-based Vertex EX SSD uses no more than 2 Watt and should function properly with temperatures between 0 and 70 degrees Celsius. The MTBF is estimated at 1.5 million hours and OCZ provides 2 years of warranty with the Vertex EX drives. Prices have not yet been mentioned, though the SSD's are expected in two weeks already.
