It was already known that the Radeon HD4890 scored quite well in the area of overclocking. The RV790 chip used in this card is a tweaked version of the RV770 GPU, which can be found in the other HD4800 cards. The HD4890 has a reference core frequency of 850 MHz, but anything between 50 and 100 MHz more can be reached with decent aircooling.
On the VR-Zone forum, someone's been able to acquire an HD4890 which could easily be overclocked to 970 MHz. This overclock lead to a new attempt, while using liquid nitrogen. By means of the Rivatuner software, the GPU's voltage has been increased from 1,3125 to 1,425 Volt, making sure the chip would be stable, even under higher clock frequencies.

The liquid nitrogen was able to keep the card cooled down to -40 degrees Celsius, a temperature which allowed the GPU's core to be clocked to 1130 MHz, an overclock of 280 MHz. Combined with a 4.2 GHz Core i7 processor, the configuration scored 23664 points in 3DMark 06.
