Intel's Lynnfield quadcore is expected in the third quarter of this year under the name Core i5. As the name suggests, the Core i5 is the little brother of the widely available Core i7 processor. Earlier reports stated that the Core i5 features 8MB of L3 cache, a 95 W TDP and an integrated dual-channel DDR3-controller, contrary to the Core i7, which uses a triple-channel controller.

With the launch of Lynnfield and its corresponding P55-chipset closing in, more detailed specification rumors start to surface. It's expected that the new processors, which use Socket 1156, will feature clock frequencies of 2.66, 2.8, and 2.93 GHz. Another allegation is that they will have Intel Turbo Boost technology, which allows a single core to elevate its clock frequency to reach a greater performance in single-threaded applications. The heightened frequencies would respectively be 3.2, 3.46, and 3.6 GHz.

Up till now, it was expected that the Lynnfield quadcores would feature HyperThreading. The HyperThreading technology is one that was already present in Pentium 4 processors; it allows each core to have two individual threads, making for a more efficient calculative power. It's now rumored however, that the CPU with the lowest frequency will not possess HyperThreading. This 2.66 GHz model would also be lacking vPro and TXT functionality.

The old pentium 4 has only one core, but two threads; this means that a quadcore with HyperThreading would have eight threads.

TechConnect also mentions prices for the three Lynnfields: respectively 196, 284 and 562 USD. Please bear in mind that these prices are unconfirmed and not guaranteed.
