AMD's mainstream notebook plans up to 2012

Last year, images surfaced of AMD's plans for the notebooksegment. Those images spoke of Tigris, Danube and Sabine platforms, which were respectively scheduled for release in this year, 2010 and 2011. This weekend, Expreview has acquired two roadmaps that provide more details on the aforementioned platforms.

According to the image, later this year three new mobile chipsets will be released; branded RS880MC, RS880M and RX881. All three are part of the Tigris platform. Both RS880 chipsets support DirectX 10.1, HyperTransport 3 and PCI-Express 2.0. The RS880M chipset also has UVD2 functionality and an external GPU from ATI's M9x series. The RX881will be a seperate chipset with HyperTransport 3 support. 

The RS880M will be combined with AMD's SB710 southbridge, which will allow up to fourteen USB connectors and six SATA 3.0 Gbit/s ports. The Tigris platform will feature processors with the codename Caspian. Those CPUs bear a striking resemblance to the current Puma platform. Caspian will be a 45nm dualcore processor with DDR2 support of up to 800MHz.

The Danube platform is scheduled for 2010. THis platform uses the same RS880M chipsets, but combines them with the new SB800 southbridge, which also adds two more USB ports, four PCI-Express lanes and RAID. The processors of this platform will be codenamed Champlain. Champlain processors are also 45nm and will be AMD's first mobile quadcores. This platform also integrates DDR3 (1066 MHz) supports into notebooks. 

Lastly, the Sabine platform will be released in 2011. Sabine will be combined with Llano, which will be AMD's first mobile processor to feature an integrated graphics controller. According to AMD, this is no longer just a CPU, but a combination of CPU+GPU. The company calls the technology Advanced Processing Unit (APU). This combination is also known as the Fusion processor. Llano will be a 32nm chip, supporting DirectX 11, UVD 3 and DDR3 1600 MHz. At the same time, the SB900 southbridge -which features an integrated DAC and USB 3.0 support- will be launched.
