Acer introduces first Ion-based nettop

After reports were filed last year that Intel would allow other manufacturer's chipsets to be used in combination with its efficient Atom processor, it was only a matter of time before someone would actually create such a chip. Yesterday, Acer officially presented the AspireRevo. This nettop doesn't use the conventional Intel 945GSE chipset, but nVidia's GeForce 9400M one. The combination of this chipset and the Atom processor is known as the Ion platform, one that Microsoft deemed suitable for both Windows Vista and Windows 7. 

The AspireRevo is powered by a 1.6 GHz Atom 230, which can optionally be replaced by an Atom 330. The Atom 330 is also clocked at 1.6 GHz, but features twice the L2 cache. The used GeForce 9400 chipset is capable of decoding and playing all types of HD-material, as well as play modern games in a limited resolution (1024 x 768 pixels), on normal quality. This could not be done on the 945GSE chipset. 

The AspireRevo nettop is sized 180,3 x 180,3 x 30,5 mm and Acer mentions living room usage. The device has an HDMI-output, which can also power DVI-monitors through an adaptor. This output allows HD-televisions and monitors to be linked to the PC easily. The nettop supports up to 4 GB of DDR2-memory and has room for a single SATA harddisk or SSD. Also present is an eSATA port, six USB 2.0 connectors and a D-sub connector. Gigabit LAN, a 4-in-1 cardreader and the option for an 802.11 b/g/n-draft network card would also be possible. Windows Vista Home Premium comes pre-installed on Acer's new nettop. 

As extra, Acer will be bundling a 3D-motion gaming controller with its AspireRevo. This device will add Wii-like features to the nettop's functionality. Specific details are still unknown.

Nadat eind vorig jaar bekend werd dat Intel ook chipsets die niet in eigen huis vervaardigd zijn zou gaan toestaan in combinatie met haar zuinige Atom processor, was het een kwestie van wachten op het eerste product dat dit zou waarmaken. Gisteravond presenteerde Acer officieel de AspireRevo. Deze nettop maakt geen gebruik van de tot op heden veel geziene Intel 945GSE chipset, maar van een GeForce 9400M chipset van nVidia. De combinatie van deze zuinige processor en chipset staat ook wel bekend als het Ion platform, dat enige tijd geleden door Microsoft geschikt bevonden werd voor zowel Windows Vista als Windows 7.

Het kloppend hart van de AspireRevo is standaard de Atom 230 met een kloksnelheid van 1,6 GHz. Optioneel kan er gekozen worden voor de dualcore Atom 330 met dezelfde klokfrequentie en tweemaal zoveel L2 cachegeheugen. De basis voor het apparaat is de  nVidia GeForce 9400 geïntegreerde chipset. Onze test van de GeForce 9300/9400 chipset wijst uit dat deze chipset uitstekend alle soorten HD-materiaal kan decoderen en afspelen, en moderne games in een beperkte resolutie (1024 x 768 pixels) op normale kwaliteit prima te spelen zijn; iets wat van de 945GSE chipset minder gauw gezegd kan worden.

De AspireRevo nettop meet een schamele 180,3 x 180,3 x 30,5 mm en is volgens Acer bij uitstek geschikt om in de woonkamer te plaatsen. Een HDMI-uitgang, die met een adapter ook DVI-monitoren kan aansturen, zorgt er voor dat HD-televisies -en monitoren probleemloos aan te sluiten zijn. Verder ondersteunt de nettop tot 4 GB DDR2-geheugen, is er plaats voor één SATA harde schijf of SSD en zijn er onder andere aansluitmogelijkheden in de vorm van één eSATA poort, zes USB2.0 connectors en een D-sub aansluiting. Ook een 4-in-1 kaartlezer, een Gigabit netwerkcontroller en de optie voor een 802.11 b/g/n-draft netwerkkaart zouden behoren tot de mogelijkheden. Het geheel wordt aangestuurd door Windows Vista Home Premium.

Als extraatje zal Acer naar verluidt een spelcontroller met 3D-bewegingssensors bij haar AspireRevo nettop gaan leveren. Dit apparaatje zal een soort van Wii-achtige features moeten toevoegen aan de functionaliteit van de nettop. Specifieke details zijn op dit moment echter nog niet bekend.

Acer has not yet released all specifications and expansion possibilities, which means that a definitive price is still not available either. It's rumored that nVidia insists on a competitive pricetag of under US $300, with exception for the models with added functionality. The AspireRevo will likely become available this summer, after which more Ion-based models will be following.
