Following the Rampage II Gene, ASUS now introduces high-end Micro-ATX motherboard based on Intel's socket 775 platform. The latest addition to the Republic of Gamers series will be known as the Maximus II Gene and features Intel's P45 chipset. This motherboard supports all Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors with an FSB of up to 1600 MHz. The P45 chipset has already proven itself to be a fine overclocked and ASUS has added multiple options to the board's BIOS to enhance the performance even more.

ASUS' micro-ATX P45 board has four DDR2 memory slots, which are able to handle frequencies of up to 1300 MHz. Each memory slot can hold up to 4 GB, making for a total of 16 GB of RAM. Because the P45 chipset is compatible with Crossfire, ASUS has added two PCI-Express 16x slots to the motherboard. These will divide the available 16 lanes to run in an 8x/8x configuration when a second card is installed.

The used micro-ATX form factor does not seem to be limiting the connectivity options; the Maximus II Gene features 12 USB ports, 7x SATA, one PATA and two FireWire connectors. Networks are handled by the Gigabit LAN port and the audio is controlled by the seperately bundled SupremeFX 7.1 sound module with EAX4.0 support. Also enclosed in the box is a full version of Kaspersky Antivirus software and a CD with 3DMark '06 Advanced Edition.
