nVidia has officially launched its 980a SLI chipset, which supports AMD's AM2(+) and AM3 processors, as well as both DDR2 and DDR3 memory. The chipset can simply be described as a "780i SLI motherboard, only then AMD-based". Apart from compatibility with nVidia's 3-way-SLI and quad-SLI, the motherboard features an integrated graphics controller, the GeForce 8300 IGP with DVI-D and D-Sub connectors. To ensure optimal bandwidth for all graphics card slots, an nForce 200 chip has been added to the chipset.
Six SATA ports are present on the motherboard, as well as two additional SATA connectors on the I/O panel. Also available are twelve USB ports, Gigabit LAN and Intel HD Audio.
It's expected that manufacturers will soon release their own motherboards based on this 980a SLI chipset.
