With the launch of AMD's Radeon HD4890 graphics card coming up, several manufacturers are already working on the card's design. ASUS has a version planned with an alternative PCB and enhanced cooling. This card should take the RV790 chip's performance to the next level.
The power provision is now completely digital and the 6+2 circuit is controlled by two individual VRM controllers. This allows the GPU voltage to be adjusted using software (maximum 1.4 Volt). Another adjustment to the card is the presence of a 6-pin and 8-pin power connector, compared to the reference model's sole 6-pin. This allows for more power to be drawn into the card, making higher clock frequencies possible. Special Fujitsu regulators have been used to ensure a more stable power circuit with the RV790 chip.
These changes -in combination with an improved cooling- allow the core to be clocked at 900 MHz and the GDDR5 memory at 4 GHz. It's obvious that these tweaks come at a price. Though the actual RRP is still unknown, it's surely higher than the 249,99 dollar of the reference model.
