Samsung earlier started mass production of 50nm GDDR5 memory chips and mentioned that it would be switching to 50 nm for all memory chips. The company has now announced its first 2 GB DDR3 memory chip produced using the 50 nm process.

Samsung will release a total of eighteen different configurations with this brand new memory chip, which will mostly be used in servers. Part of the series is a 16 GB registered DDR3 RIMM memory module and an 8 GB RDIMM (registered dual inline memory modle). These sets allow up to 192 GB of RAM to be used on a dual-socket server motherboard. The 16 GB RDIMM's have a 1066 MHz clock frequency and require 1.35 Volt. Since other DDR3 servermemory uses 1.5 Volt, Samsung's save up to 20% of power. Apart from the energy saving, the modules also feature a dual-die configuration, which is cheaper to produce and performs better than quad-die configurations.
Because the 2 Gbit chips require up to 40% less energy than the 1 Gbit DDR3 memory kits, the new ones will most likely be used in notebooks and servers. Research agency IDC claims that the demand of 2 Gbit DDR3 modules will increase with 30% over the next two years. They also report that the market share of the entire DDR3 memory market will rise to 75% in 2011.
