The brand Fusion-io has added a new version of the superfast PCI-Express based SSD to its line-up. The ioDrive Duo, as the addition is branded is a hard disk controller and SSD in one, the card is directly connected through PCI-Express, after which it can be approached as storage device.

The ioDrive Duo is designed for heavy-duty database systems which process numerous reading- and writing operations simultaneously. Thanks to the fast flashchips and the two intelligent controllers, the SSD reaches speeds of up to 1500 MB/s for reading and 1400 MB/s for writing. This makes the ioDrive Duo many times faster than a regular 15.000 RPM disk or a SATA-connected SSD. When there's four of these ioDrive Duo's in a single system, speeds of over 6 GB/s can be reached.

Fusion-io's intelligent solid-state-drives are able to read 186.000 files of 4 KB, per second. When used for writing, approximately 167.000 files of 4 KB each are processed per second. The controllers on the ioDrive Duo feature advanced wear-leveling technology and ECC error correction to ensure data safety. Optionally, two of these Fusion-io cards can be configured in raid 1, which makes the whole even more secure.

The double Fusion-io SSD will be released in April in capacities of 160, 320 and 640 GB. By the second half of this year, technological developments would also allow a 1.28 TB version of the card to be made.
