SiS chipset in Dell dualcore Atom thin client
SiS has designed a chipset for the dualcore Intel Atom processor, which was introduced last year. The company reports that the SiSM671 northbridge and SiS968 southbridge will initially be used in the Dell OptiPlex FX160 Thin Client with an Atom 230 processor (single core 1.6 GHz) or Atom 330 (dualcore 1.6 GHz)
The FX160 is a small business desktop, capable of running operating systems such as Windows XP Embedded or SUSE Linux with applications and data on a central server. The SiSM671 chipset supports up to 4 GB of DDR2-800 memory. The integrated SiS307DV Mirage 3 graphisc chip has a DVI output and supports DirectX 9 with up to 256 MB of graphics memory. The chipset also provides SATA 2 connectors, HD audio, USB 2.0, Gigabit LAN and 802.11 b/g Wireless LAN.
Dual core Atoms will predominantly be used in small desktops such as the mentioned Dell OptiPlex FX160. The SiSM671-based motherboard is a mini-ITX model, the case has a volume of only 2.4 liters.
