During the CES, ASUS showed its latest gaming notebook. The ASUS W90 features an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2, which means that there are two RV770 chips in Crossfire. To compensate the heat production and power consumtpion, the clock frequencies are kept lower than the desktop version of the card. However, both RV770 chips do feature all 800 shader units.

An ASUS representative has reported that the notebook will become available on te 23th of February. It means that the Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 will be officially launched then. Around the same time, the midrange Mobility Radeon HD4670 with 320 shader units is expected. About a week later, the long-anticipated notebook version of the HD4850 will also become available.

The graphics performance of the HD4870 X2 in ASUS'  new notebook racks up 15.000 pointsi n 3DMark 06. The system has quite the potential as well; overclocker Kinc from XtremeSystems broke the 20.000 points in 3DMark 06 by overclocking the quadcore processor to 3.9 GHz. The core of the HD4870 X2 graphics card is clocked at 600 MHz, the memory at 900 MHz.

ASUS W90 reaches 20,284 points in 3DMark 06 when overclocked

With the mobile version of the HD4870 X2, AMD reclaims the throne in the mobile segment, where the SLI notebooks were the best performing for a long time.
