While most attention is drawn to OCZ's Apex and Vertex series of Solid-state drives, the company will soon release another line-up, branded Summit. PC Perspective acquired a sample of this new SSD, featuring a SATA II connector, packed in a 2.5" case.
OCZ's Summit SSD's use yet another different controller; one of Samsung's this time. There's also 64 MB of cache memory present, which should account for even better transit speeds. Like the Vertex, Apex and Core V2 series, the Summit disks will also feature MLC memory chips. The disk will be released in a 60, 120 and 250 GB edition.
The speeds of this Summit SSD seem promising; 208 MB/s and 172 MB/s for respectively reading and writing. They are unlikely to surpass the Vertex, but are faster than the earlier-introduced Core V2 and Solid series. PC Perspective's first tests show that the Summit books consistent results. In most cases, it nears Intel's X25-M and the disk doesn't fail any of tests. The Apex SSD, which -with its two controllers- is in fact an internal raid of SSD's, doesn't come near the Summit in most benchmarks, especially when it comes to random writes.
OCZ will add the Summit series to its line-up by the end of March. The disk bear the following price indications:
- 60GB: $199
- 120GB: $399
- 250GB: $829
