VR-Zone has released a roadmap of Intel's plans in the field of larger Solid State Drives (SSD). The image shows SSD's with capacities of 160 GB and even 320 GB. The current line-up of 50 nm SLC memory chips will have a maximum capacity of 64 GB. The 50 nm MLC memory chips will also become available in a 160 GB model.
A transition to 34 nm memory chips during the fourth quarter of this year should double the storage capacity in all series. This means that a 128 GB model will be released in the X25-E series, as well as a 320 GB version in both the X25-M and X18-M line-ups.
Braidwood -the successor of Intel Turbo Memory- also surfaces on the roadmap. Braidwood will debute early 2010 on motherboards with Intel's Q57, P57 and H57 chipsets and will function as a small onboard SSD. With a storage capacity of up to 16 GB, this onboard SSD could be used to install a complete operating system.
