Intel reports that the entry model of its Core i7 series of processors, the Core i7 920, will receive a new stepping. Remarkable is that the stepping doesn't alter the chip itself. Due to the Integrated Heat Spreader (IHS), the current stepping, named C0, has a problem with serial number readability. The new D0 stepping, will feature the serial number in a different place.

The new stepping will receive a new CPU ID, which means the motherboard will identify the two steppings as different processors. This also means that a possible BIOS update is required. The boxed version of Intel's Core i7 920 D0 stepping will be released on the 2nd of March. The tray-version will hit the shelves on the 10th of April.
