Even before Intel introduces its first Nehalem-based Xeon processors, the chip manufacturer has already released information on an eight-core version of the CPU. This Xeon will be a 45nm model with 2.3 billion transistors. Based on the Nehalem architecture, the CPU will be expanded with additional L3-cache (24 MB total) and a four-channel memory interface.
Thanks to the speedy Quickpath interface, this eight-core Xeon is also perfectly suited for larger servers with four processor sockets, which means up to 16 threads can be processed for each present physical CPU. This means that in a four-socket configuration, 64 parallel threads are available.
Intel will release additional information during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco, which takes place on the 8th of February and runs till the 12th. A launch date has not yet been mentioned.
