Records exist to be broken, and with that thought in the back of their heads, two members of the XtremeSystem forum went on a quest to beat the current 3DMark 05 world record of 45.474 points. A remarkable fact is that the two users got hold of a -till now- unknown processor: the Intel Core i7 Extreme 975.
The used configuration consisted of a K|ngp|n F1 tube to keep the processor cooled down, a PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 W power supply, Gigabyte GA-EX58 Extreme motherboard, 3 GB of DDR3-memory in triple channel and lastly, two massive ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 graphics cards in a CrossfireX setup. With the processor clocked at 5.259 MHz and the two GPUs at reference clock frequencies, the record attempt was a succes as the two attained a total score of 47.026 points.
Standardly, Intel's Core i7 Extreme 975 features a 3.33 GHz clock frequency, which is a 133 MHz more than the previous topmodel, i7 Extreme 965. As usual with Extreme Editions, the multiplier is unlocked. Another fun fact is that the new CPU features the same D0 stepping of the Bloomfield core as the one Intel will be revising its Core i7 920 models with. The other specifications are similar to those of the i7 Extreme 965: four cores which are able to process eight threads simultaneously by using HyperThreading, a 6.4 GT/s GPI, 256 KB of L2 cache for each individual core, 8 MB share L3 cache and a triple channel DDR3-memory controller.

It's expected that Intel's Core i7 Extreme 975 will be released by the end of the second quarter, or early in the third quarter of this year. A price of this new processor has not yet been mentioned, but it is likely to be around the current price of the i7 Extreme 965 (US $999).
