The upcoming HDMI certification update will bring more than a simple connector-shrink. Engadget reports that the transfer speed will be increased, this not only to support even higher resolutions, but possibly also to allow Ethernet connections to be made.

With the new HDMI connector, a seperate Toslink cable for multi-channel audio return becomes unrequired. The signal will be added in the HDMI specifications. The current HDMI-cables allow a television to receive sound from the DVD-recorder, but not the other way round.

When the new HDMI connect will officially be introduced is still unclear.
