After the introduction of several netbooks based on Microsoft Windows and several version of Linux, some consumers have been wondering whether a Mac OS X netbook is at hand. A product like that would have to be manufactured and sold by Apple itself because of its licensing.
Owners of a variety of netbooks however have been able to install the operating system by hacking. This is not only against Apple's licensing, but also gives problems with WiFi due to the lack of driver support.
Until recently, requests to manufacturers of wireless chips to release OS X drivers have been unsuccessful. Realtek however has been spreading drivers for the wireless chip in MSI's Wind U100, after a special request from users at MSIWind.net. The driver is a beta version that is not compatible with Airport but instead simulated a Bluetooth connection.
Additional information on these Realtek drivers can be found on MSIWind.net. It's still unclear whether Apple will release a netbook of its own. It is possible that more details will be revealed during Macworld 2009 in early January.
