Earlier, reports were filed on the overclocking potential of AMD's latest 45nm quadcore processors. During a Texas convention, earlier this week, the company showed their processor surpassing the 6 GHz mark. AMD's new quadcore is also able to maintain high clock frequencies under load, as proven in a benchmark session with liquid nitrogen.
Overclockers were using a Gigabyte motherboard, based on AMD's 790GX chipset. This chipset uses the SB750 southbridge, which significantly improves the overclocking potential in comparison to the older SB700 one. According to AMD, this new chipset is playing a big part in accomplishing these high frequencies. To prove that the system ran stabil, Far Cry 2's benchmark was completed at 5 GHz with 1.9 Vcore. It's a shame that the results weren't released to the public, but the fact the processor is capable of playing a game successfully at such enormous frequencies, is a new milestone for AMD.
The picture shows the test configuration in which the processor was cooled to -186 degrees Celsius with liquid nitrogen. Next to the system we see Sami Maekinen, the creator of AMD's overdrive software, which was used to reach the 5 GHz overclock.
