Recently, AMD launched its new 45 nm quad core Opteron processors, named Shanghai. Dell makes use of these new processors and launches eigh new PowerEdge servers. Introduced is one tower-model (T605), four rack-models (R905, R805, 2970, SC1435) and three blade-models (M905, M805, M605).

The topmodel of the dual processor systems (2P) is the PowerEdge R805, which features AMD's Opteron 2384 processors. The multi processor (4P) topmodel is the PowerEdge R905, equipped with AMD's Opteron 8384 processors. In the official VMware virtualisation benchmark, named VMmark, both Dell servers take the lead when compared to competitor Intel.
