Samsung has announced today that it has started production on a 256GB SSD to be used in desktop or notebook PC's. The newest addition to the line up means that they now have a full range of SSD's starting on 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB, 128GB and the new 256GB drive.

Samsung claims that the performance of the new drive is up to twice asfast as what the current generation of drives produce. They have said that the sequential read performance can reach 220MB/sec and the write performance can get up to speeds of 200MB/sec. In real world terms this means you can write 25 high definition movies to the disk in only 21 minutes, where a 7200 rpm SATA disk would take over 70 minutes to do the same. Samsung also claims that the new 256GB SSD starts applications up to 10 times faster than convential hard disks.

The new addition to the Samsung SSD family weighs in at 81 grams, is the same size as any 2.5 inch drive and consumes a very low 1.1 watts of power.

When the drive will actually be available from retailers and at what price has not yet been disclosed.
