Western Digital announces that its external My Passport Studio hard disks will be equipped with the 9-pin FireWire 800 interface (IEEE 1394b). Theoretically, this doubles the transfer speed of the disk from 400 Mbit/sec to 800 Mbit/sec. The FireWire 400 and USB2.0 connectors will remain untouched.
The My Passport Studio disk with added FireWire 800 support will be available in the following capacities: 320 GB, 400 GB and 500 GB. The dimensions of the disk are 126,74 x 81 x 18 mm and it weighs 180 grams. It is entirely powered by the used connector, making an additional power adaptor unnecessary.
The My Passport Studio is specially designed for users of Apple's Mac and the device comes formatted in the HFS+ file system. This does not mean it cannot be used on other computers, the disk can easily be formatted to a Windows-compatible file system. All of the My Passport Studio hard disks have five years of warranty.
