Eminent launches a new mediaplayer which is able to playback files with a resolution of up to 1080p. The mediaplayer has room for a 3.5" STA hard disk with a capacity of up to 1.5TB. Thanks to the integrated bittorrent and usenet client, the player can also be used to download files, without requiring an additional computer.
The device, branded EM7070 hdMEDIA, offers support for video codecs such as DivX, WMV9 HD, MP4, MKV (H.264) and VC-1 with resolutions of up to 1920x1080. Through firmware updates, the system could also become compatible with future video codecs. The hdMEDIA comes without a hard disk, but the two USB ports allow external devices to be added easily as well. On the front, the player has three status lights and a small fan.
As mentioned, the device is able to download through bittorrent and usenet, but the functionality does not end here. Videos from Youtube and pictures from sites like Flickr and Picasa can be played on the hdMEDIA as well. Thanks to the built-in FTP- and Sambaserver, the mediaplayer is also able to function as a simple NAS.
As expected of a 1080p mediaplayer, there are plenty of connectivity options. It has an HDMI port, component, composite and VHS. Using the optical cable, the sound can also be sent through an external receiver in 5.1 format. A remote is also included in the set.
Eminent's EM7070 hdMEDIA has a recommended price of €259 and will become available later this month.
