In 2005, Dell recalled a number of notebook batteries manufactured by Sony due to potential overheating. Shortly after that, reports surfaced of several manufacturers under which Lenovo, Apple, Toshiba, Fujitsu Siemens and Sony itself, using the same Sony batteries. Dell has filed a statement that its Battery Replacement Program will be adjusted, based on Sony's new information which states that there are possibly 15.000 more defect batteries. Though it seems a lot, it comes nowhere near the earlier recalled eight million.
According to Dell only 268 batteries with a possible flaw have been put into its Latitude, Inspiron and Precision notebooks, or shipped as replacement batteries. The batteries with these possible problems bear the serial numbers OU091 and W1436, have been produced between the 9th of November and the 11th of April by Sony, and could be inside the following Dell notebooks:
- Latitude: 110L, D500, D505, D510, D520, D530, D600, D610
- Inspiron: 500M, 510M, 600M, 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, 5160
- Precision M20
Users of the mentioned Dell models can compare their serial number on the Battery Replacement Program website. The company also recommends that people who have checked their numbers earlier check it again, to be certain that their notebook is unaffected. Faulty batteries will be replaced without charge.
Dell has announced that the small amount of batteries that are faulty will not influence its financial situation.
