After all rumors and promises on a possible HD4850 X2, the first images have finally appeared on the internet. The HD4850 X2 is based on two RV770 graphics chips clocked at 625 MHz and is equipped with GDDR3 instead of the GDDR5 used in the faster HD4870 X2. This slower dual-GPU card will be filling the gap in price/performance between the HD4870 and the HD4870 X2.
Hardspell's website shows a picture of the Radeon HD 4850 X2 by Sapphire. The card features an alternative dual-slot cooler with two fans and aluminum cooling blocks. It has 2 GB of GDDR3 memory, twice as much memory per core as a regular HD4850. This shows that the card is intended for gaming on higher resolutions as well.
The two graphics chips on the card each have their own aluminum cooling block with copper core. Additional blocks have been placed on the power provision of the card, as well as on the PCI-Express switch which takes care of the communication between the chips. The whole is covered by a large black cover. Naturally, the card also features a Crossfire connector, making it possible to link the card to another one from the HD4800 line-up.
