Earlier it was announced that the successor of the current Radeon HD 4800 serie will feature a die-shrink to 40 nm. The German site ATI-Forum.de reports that 'secret' sources tell that ATI wants to combine this RV870 chip with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory standardly.
The growing demand for graphics memory in games, especially in higher resolutions, are likely to be the motivation for doubling th memory from 512 MB to 1 GB. With this, ATI tries to stay ahead of its largest competitor: nVidia. The latter equipped its recent GeForce GTX 260 and GeForce GTX 280 graphics cards with respectively 896 MB and 1 GB of memory. How much this increase in memory wll affect ATI's famed price/performance ratio is still unclear.
