Despite the fact that Seagate is the world's largest hard disk manufacturer, the company isn't rushed to introduce Solid State Disks (SSD). Seagate has announced that there are no plans to release any SSD's prior to 2009. At first, Seagate will provide SSD's to large business partners, later they will also release disks for the regular consumer. Several manufacturers such as Intel, Toshiba, OCZ, Transcend, Chaintech and Buffalo have already released Solid State Disks.

Even though the company is entering the SSD-segment at a relatively late point in time, it does admit that this new technology is probably going to replace the conventional hard disk eventually. Seagate is currently cooperating with JEDEC to set a formal standard for the lifetime of SSD's. It´s also in contact with one of the large NAND-flashmemory manufacturers, which will take on the actual chip production for the SSD's.
