AMD's 45nm quadcore server- and workstationprocessors, a line of CPU's we recently reported about, are to be released in a short while. There have been many rumors on the improvements Shanghai will bring compared to the current Barcelona generation. According to AMD's server and workstation director, Pat Patla, Shanghai will be an average 35% faster than Barcelona at equal clock frequencies.

Patle claims the larger L3 cache is the cause of the significant performance increase. The expected increase of 35% is amplified by the greater clock frequencies Shanghai will feature. The fastest Barcelona Opteron processor is clocked at 2.5 GHz. The current fastest Shanghai Opteron will be clocked at 2.8 GHz.
