While Intel's already working on its second generation of 45nm processors with the Core i7, AMD will soon release the first generation of processors based on 45nm. The 45nm Opteron, codenamed Shanghai, has now been completed and taken into mass production.

According to AMD, the 45nm Shanghai is about 20% faster per Mhz than its 65nm predecessor, the Barcelona. The new quadcore's L3-cache has been increased to 6 MB as well. The new Opterons will be produced for socket F motherboards and will become available in frequencies of 2.1 up to 2.7 GHz. Starting next year, some models will be introduced featuring a faster Hypertransport connection and clockspeeds of up to 2.8 Ghz.

Apart from the improved performance, AMD also worked on the power consumption. The new quadcores are significantly more efficient compared to the 65nm Barcelona models. The TDP values start at 55 Watt for the processors up to 2.3 GHz and 75 Watt of those up to 2.7 GHz. Prices for these new processors have not yet been released.
