[IDF2009] AMD shows DisplayPort at IDF
It may sound strange, but Intel's primary competitor AMD also had its place on the tech showcase of the Intel Developer Forum. Announced as "formerly ATI" the company presented its new Radeon HD5870 graphics card with DisplayPort connector.
The DisplayPort standard was designed by several companies, including Intel. Apart from some technical improvements compared to DVI and HDMI, one of the biggest advantages of the new connector is that its license-free. As of yet, the number of products equipped with the interface is still rather limited, especially compared to HDMI. The new ATI 5000-series is likely to change this. DisplayPort controllerchips for monitors are also becoming cheaper, which means more screens featuring the interface are likely to be released.
Another trend is the rise of the Mini DisplayPort connector, designed by Apple. This smaller connector can also be used license-free. The mini connector is found on the EyeFinity-6 edition of the Radeon HD 5870 but is always quite suitable for notebooks.
