Eurocom has announced two new notebooks that are based on Intel's mobile Core i7 platform, known as Calpella. The earlier launched notebooks with a Core i7 were based on the desktop version, which made them rather inefficient. As of now, there are three new mobile Core i7 chips available, specially designed for notebooks and featuring a dual-channel DDR3 memorycontroller. Features such as Hyperthreading and Turbo boost are to guarantee that the new generation of chips is superior to the existing Core 2 line, while maintaning a similar power consumption of about 45 watt. The agressive turbo function drastically increases the clock frequency on a single core, allowing for significant performance increase in applications that do not feature multi-core support.
The new Eurocom notebooks are the 15,6 inch W860CU Cougar and the 17,3 inch W870CU Cheetah. Both models feature several user-specified options. There's the decision between a Core i7-720QM, an i7-820QM or an i7-920XM processor, respectively clocked at 1.6, 1.73, and 2 GHz. The gaming notebooks are equipped with a still unknown amount of DDR3-1600 MHz memory and users can pick from a GeForce GTX260M, GTX280M or Mobility Radeon HD4870XT graphics card, each with 1 GB of GDDR3 memory. If you wish to use the system as a workstation, there's also the option for nVidia's Quadro FX 3700M, also equipped with 1GB of memory.
The smaller Cougar is sized 374mm x 263mm x 42mm and weighs about 3,3 kg. The Cheetah is slightly heavier due to its size, weighing just over 4 kg. As the image below shows, the notebooks feature a black finish with red accents, similar to MSI's latest generation of gaming notebooks. Eurocom has not yet mentioned any pricetags.
