Toshiba has introduced two new SSD modules, one of which is equipped with the latest mini-SATA connector. This interface has been created by the SATA-IO group to create a universal connector for small SSD modules in netbooks and thin clients. Compared to the older SSD modules with a regular 2,5" SATA connector, both the interface and PCB have decreased in size.
The new Toshiba SSD modules will be branded SG2 and will sport 30 or 62 GB of 32nm MLC flashmemory. As mentioned, there'll be a version of the mSATA standard, as well as a 'Half-Slim' edition, which features a regular SATA connector. Both SSD's reach a sequential speed of 180 MB/s while reading and 70 MB/s while writing data. The power consumption of the SG2 flashmodules is specified at a maximum of 1,8 watt while writing data, while the drive uses no more than 65 milliwatt while idle. Toshiba specifies the MTBF at 1 million hours and states that the SSD is capable of handling impacts of up to 1500G
The mass production of Toshiba's new SSD's will start in October.
