802.11n finally official
The IEEE has finally made the IEEE 802.11n-2009 WLAN-standard official. The new standard promises significantly more bandwidth and range for wireless networks than its predecessors. Devices based on the standard's draft have been available for quite some time.
The final specification of 802.11n is branded Standard IEEE 802.11 with the subtitle "WLAN Enhancements for Higher Throughput". After seven years of delays and 560 pages of additional text, the standard will be officially presented in mid-October
Compared to the other WLAN-standards, 802.11n is to handle up to ten times higher bandwidths, totaling a maximum of 600 Mbit/s. The improvements on the transmission channels and integration of multiple antennas, as well as MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) allow these higher speeds to be reached. Each individual stream is capable of reaching a 150 MBit/s bandwidth with the new standard, while the combination of multiple streams allows for an even faster transmission. Another advantage of the standard is its ability to utilize both the conventional 2,4 GHz as well as the less common 5 GHz frequency.
